We have you covered, whether you’re just starting off or considering a career shift. So, let’s dive in and discover the fascinating world of Further Education.

Understanding the Role of a Further Education Tutor

Further Education (FE) is an important part of our educational system. It can act as the bridge between secondary education and higher education (University). FE colleges and institutions provide a variety of courses ranging from vocational training to academic disciplines. Assisting students of all backgrounds in acquiring new skills, knowledge and qualifications.

The Role of a Tutor in Further Education

Tutors in FE serve as guides and mentors for their students, to help them on their learning journey. Their role is crucial in creating a supportive and engaging learning environment.

As a tutor, you’ll have many roles and responsibilities. Tutors are responsible for providing entertaining and instructive lessons to their students. They make complex concepts understandable by bringing the subjects they teach to life. Furthermore, tutors inspire interest and passion for knowledge in their students through their teaching. Tutors are the keepers of information and wisdom. Whether it’s in Maths, English or Vocational skills, tutors spread their knowledge and expertise to their learners. Moreover, they recognise that each learner is unique, with their own set of skills and weaknesses. Tutors give customised guidance to bridge knowledge gaps, assisting students in overcoming hurdles and reaching their full potential. This individualised approach can make a huge difference in a student's education progress.

Qualifications and Skills Needed

Becoming a further education tutor requires a combination of specific qualifications and a diverse set of skills. A solid educational background is required to begin a career as a tutor in further education. The majority of tutors have relevant qualifications, such as a degree. Some people may choose occupational qualifications or considerable experience over formal degrees. Especially in vocational or technical professions. However, sometimes having a degree or higher-level qualification in your area may be an advantage.

Practical experience, in addition to formal qualifications, can greatly improve your potential as a tutor. Real-world experience in your subject’s sector or field might provide excellent insights to share with your learners. It can also assist you in connecting academic topics to real-world uses, making your teaching more relevant and interesting.

Skills needed as a tutor

One of the most fundamental skills for a tutor is the ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely. As a tutor, you need to be able to express complex information in a way that students can understand, regardless of their prior knowledge. Furthermore, every tutor should know that each student is unique. Competent teachers modify their teaching style to accommodate various learning preferences and skills. This means flexibility is essential in adapting your approach to unique learner needs. Learning can be challenging, and students may face difficulties at times. Patience and empathy are essential traits that allow you to provide the support and encouragement needed during these moments. Moreover, tutors need to be culturally sensitive and inclusive, respecting the backgrounds and perspectives of all students.

Finally, tutors need to be proficient in technology. As we live in a digital age, familiarity with educational technology and online learning platforms is extremely important. Tutors should be comfortable using technology to enhance their teaching methods.

What is the AET?

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), formerly known as PTLLS, is a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals aspiring to become educators and trainers in Further Education and other adult learning environments. This qualification equips you with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to effectively teach and support learners of various backgrounds and abilities. The AET is a foundational qualification and an excellent starting point for those new to teaching or training roles. It’s also great for experienced educators seeking formal recognition of their teaching abilities.

Entry requirements?

Most AET courses require you to be 18 years or older. You need to have a good level of English and Maths skills. You also need qualifications and occupational competence within the area you want to teach. For example, if you want to teach within the plumbing sector, having a level 2 or 3 in plumbing is beneficial.
