Salary: 17,222 to 21,100 dependent on experience
As the Primary SEN Teaching Assistant you will work closely with teaching staff to support two students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including one student who is on the autism spectrum. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children with a range of developmental, emotional, and educational needs, and will play a crucial role in helping these students engage with their learning, develop social skills, and access a full and enriching curriculum.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide tailored support to the two assigned students, adapting teaching methods and resources to meet their unique learning needs and preferences.
Assist the students as required, while promoting independence and self-esteem.
Implement strategies outlined in the students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to facilitate their learning and social interaction.
Learning Environment:
Support the creation and maintenance of a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages engagement and participation from all students.
Prepare and organise classroom materials, resources, and learning activities that cater to the diverse needs of the students.
Collaboration with staff and parents:
Work closely with the class teacher and SENDCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) to identify and implement effective support strategies.
Attend and contribute to meetings, assessments, and reviews of students with special educational needs, providing insights on their progress and challenges.
Behaviour Management:
Use positive behaviour management techniques to help the students navigate social situations, develop peer relationships, and enhance their communication skills.
Remain calm and supportive in challenging situations while fostering a safe and understanding atmosphere for the students.
Monitoring Progress:
Observe and assess the students' academic, social, and emotional development on an ongoing basis, documenting achievements and areas for improvement.
Provide feedback to the class teacher on the students' progress and suggest adaptations to instructional and support strategies when necessary.
Liaison with Parents:
Build strong relationships with parents and caregivers, communicating effectively about their child's progress and needs.
Attend parent-teacher meetings and contribute to discussions regarding the students' educational development.
Professional Development:
Engage in relevant training and development opportunities to enhance skills in supporting students with SEN, particularly those on the autism spectrum.
Stay updated on best practices for SEN support and contribute ideas to the broader school community to support all students with special educational needs.
Qualifications and Experience:
Relevant qualifications such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or equivalent experience in a similar role.
Experience working with children with Special Educational Needs, particularly autism, is essential.
Understanding of the principles of child development and learning processes aligned with primary education.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents.
Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check will be required.
