Job Description

Total People, one of the UK's leading apprenticeship providers and part of LTE Group, now have an exciting opportunity for talented professionals to come and join our Operations team in the position of Learner Support Assistant.

This role is offered on a permanent, part time (29.6 hours per week) basis.

In this role you will provide additional support for learners aged 16 to 24 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) under the direction of the class tutor support during their classes, in small groups or on a one-to-one basis.

As a Learner Support Assistant working for Total People we can guarantee variety, support and a great company to work for! You will predominantly be working out of our sites across Cheshire including Northwich and Crewe.

Although you will be working independently you will be part of a supportive and experienced team so help is always on hand. Our teams get together both virtually and in one of our many centres on a regular basis.

The key responsibilities of this role are as follows:

  • Follow support and safety plans as well as risk assessments
  • Under the direction of the Tutor provide support to learners by:
    • Clarifying and explaining instructions
    • Ensuring the learner has and is able to use equipment and materials provided
    • Motivating and encouraging learners, by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to individual needs
    • Supporting learners with social and communication language, reading, spelling, numeracy, handwriting, presentation etc.
    • Supporting assistive technology to help the learners in their learning and independence
    • Using praise, commentary and assistance to encourage the learner to concentrate and stay on task
  • Monitor learner's responses to the learning activities and, where appropriate, modify or adapt the activities as agreed with the teacher to achieve the intended learning outcomes
  • Assist in the assessment of learners, to ensure that an accurate baseline of developmental needs is identified

In order to be successful in your application you will need to meet the following essential criteria:

  • Level 2 Maths and English (or equivalent) or willingness to work towards
  • Qualifications in learning support or education or willingness to work towards
  • Experience of working successfully with young people who have Special Educational Needs and
  • Disabilities (SEND)
  • Excellent understanding of issues and barriers to learning for learners with a SEND and strategies to overcome these

And if you meet the following desirable criteria even better:

  • Experience of working in an education setting with young people with learning difficulties, disabilities and complex and physical needs
