Head Keeper

Capel Manor College is the only College in London that aims to deliver outstanding and inspirational and environmental land-based learning opportunities across the Greater London region. Our most recent Ofsted report rated the College “good” with good effectiveness of leadership and management. Aspiring to excellence, the College has an excellent reputation for quality, is financially strong and has continuous growth in student numbers.   Fundamental to the College’s forward-thinking strategy is support for the environment and food supply in Greater London and the southeast

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Keeper. The College houses educational animal collections in each of its campuses, where learners acquire applied skills in animal care and management.

The successful candidate will coordinate operations in a local collection. To achieve this, they will lead a team of Animal Keepers and coordinate rotas with Volunteers or seasonal Animal Keepers and Casual Workers, to ensure exemplar and uninterrupted husbandry and welfare for our animals throughout the year. They will model best practice to their teams, as well as our learners, by carrying out husbandry tasks themselves, when needed, and when keeping records. They will be experienced in animal keeping or zoo keeping, with a very good understanding of animal welfare and husbandry across multiple species, as well as the legal obligations of running an animal collection. Head Keepers will work with the academic Team Leaders to ensure the right plans are present to service teaching and learning in their local collection. At times, they will coordinate or carry out encounters for learners, the public, and during the College’s commercial and recruitment events, including outreach to local schools, or other places of interest. Importantly, they will be experts in their area and animals they care for, modelling exemplar practice and ambitious animal welfare standards, while sharing their knowledge with the learning teams, to strengthen our provision.

Over the last 50 years, Capel Manor College has helped thousands of school leavers and adults achieve their dream of working with animals, plants and the environment. Our natural world is changing and needs your passion to help tackle the challenges it faces in light of climate change, sustainability, air quality, waste, and food security.  As London’s only specialist environmental college, we are proud to play a vital role in the capital's green agenda. The successful candidate will support the College in delivering qualifications that are valued by land-based employers, and help kick-start learners’ careers in making a positive impact on our natural world.
