Job Title: National Functional Skills Manager

Summary and Main Purpose:

As we continue our journey in pursuit of excellence we are searching for a highly motivated and quality focused National Functional Skills Manager. We are looking for an individual with extensive experience of leading innovative Functional Skills Curriculum Development, and a track record of raising standards across all Functional skills. The successful candidate will have energy, embrace change and provide strong strategic leadership that empowers colleagues to provide high-quality learning experiences and outstanding achievement.

As the National Functional Skills Manager at Remit Group, working under the direction of the Quality Director, you will lead the planning, management and implementation of Remit’s strategy for Functional Skills, support operational managers and delivery teams to improve the quality of Functional Skills provision and improve the Functional Skills progress and outcomes for learners. You will also be an ambassador for English and maths for the organisation, represent the organisation both internally and externally and contribute to future bids and current project delivery as required.

Key Accountabilities:

● To develop and effectively communicate the Functional Skills Policy and drive the implementation and delivery of the Functional Skills Strategy and Improvement Plan.
● To lead the development and implementation of robust and effective Functional Skills delivery models and proactively support successful Functional Skills delivery across the business.
● To support the development of the Functional Skills curriculum and lead the design and development of innovative and contextualised functional skills resources.
● To design and deliver Functional Skills induction, training and development to Development Coaches so that they confidently teach functional skills qualifications and effectively contextualise the promotion of functional skills throughout the learner journey.
● To keep abreast of best practice relating to functional skills delivery, including pedagogical developments, and promote innovative delivery across the organisation.
● To evaluate the quality of Functional Skills delivery and instigate support / interventions as appropriate.
● To identify good practice Functional Skills delivery and facilitate the sharing of good practice.
● To effectively use a range of management information to monitor and report on the quality of functional skills teaching and learning and outcomes for learners.
● To work closely with the Centre Manager, leading Functional Skills IQA processes (including centre-assessed grading when available) and contributing to the planning and implementation of FS testing.
● To prepare and present monthly reports on Functional Skills performance across the organisation.
● To keep abreast of regulatory requirements, preparing thoroughly for inspections/EQA visits and contributing as appropriate during inspections or visits.
● To contribute to bid writing and project delivery as necessary.
● To support external partners in developing, implementing and embedding their own strategies to raise the standard of Functional Skills teaching and learning and improve outcomes for learners.
● To maintain a confidential approach to work within a management environment.
Any other duties as directed by the Quality Director considered appropriate for this post.

Key Requirements:



● Educated to degree level or equivalent.
● Full teaching qualification (PGCE, DTLLS, Cert Ed or equivalent)
● Functional Skills Level 2 in English, maths and ICT
● Evidence of recent Continuous Professional Development


● Maths and/or English Specialist Qualification



● Recent experience of innovative and creative Functional Skills delivery.
● Recent experience and skills in successful curriculum planning and resource development relevant to Functional Skills.
● Proven ability in producing accurate data and statistics relating to
● Functional Skills monitoring and evaluation, with demonstrable experience of effectively using this and other information to improve the quality of Functional Skills teaching and learning and outcomes for learners.
● Experience of writing concise, meaningful reports for internal and external audiences based on analytic data analysis
● Evidence of providing innovative and well received Functional Skills professional development.
● Evidence of recent involvement in the review and development of a Functional Strategy and/or Functional Skills policies, procedures, and practices.
● Extensive evidence of the innovative use of technology to support learning and assessment.

Skills and Knowledge:


● In depth and up to date knowledge of curriculum delivery for Functional Skills
● The ability to formulate and deliver an organisational strategy
for Functional Skills
● Proven ability in producing accurate data and statistics relating to
● Functional Skills monitoring and evaluation, with demonstrable experience of effectively using this and other information to improve the quality of teaching and learning and outcomes for learners.
● Proven track record of consistently meeting and exceeding targets and deadlines and capability to drive productivity and exceed targets.
● Knowledge of Ofsted and proven ability to lead on English and maths during an inspection.
● Ability to build positive relationships and to inspire and influence colleagues
● Excellent communication skills with the ability to listen and challenge in a supportive manner
● Ability to analyse situations and recommend ways forward
● Ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and meet deadlines
● Ability to make a confident positive personal impact.
● Have a flexible approach to working hours and locations
● Full clean valid driving licence


● Practical knowledge of the Apprenticeship delivery model
