Role Overview

The Vocational Technicians play an important role providing support to our Construction & Building Trades Tutors teaching offenders the necessary skills and knowledge required to achieve nationally recognised vocational qualifications and helping them to overcome any barriers to employment.

Providing technical assistance to tutors and learners, you will be supporting the learning and skills needs of individual offenders helping improve their employability skills along with contributing to the review of individual offender progress in meeting their learning and skills needs throughout their sentence. You will also undertake general duties including stock control of consumable items and tools in all the workshop areas.

You will also be required to undertake the role of Cover Tutor for the vocational training center, covering any appropriate classes, working with permanent tutors to offer relevant teaching and learning activities when cover is needed (for example, holiday and/or sickness cover). You may also be required to provide supply cover, sometimes at short notice, across a range of curriculum areas if appropriate.

What You Will Be Doing

- Supporting with the maintenance of the workshop areas ensuring they are clean, tidy and safe.�Organising tools and consumable materials including preparing and placing order with suppliers and receiving deliveries.
- Supervising, assisting and supporting learners undertaking various construction qualifications during Tutor’s preparation time.
- Provide regular teaching cover for our�vocational�construction courses�including completion all of the necessary administration (e.g. reviews, timesheets, Learning Plans)
- Ensuring that Peopleplus’s equal opportunities and health and safety procedures are adhered to, with specific attention to health and safety requirements when organising off-site activities
- Supporting Tutors to complete necessary administration.
- Carry out any additional duties as reasonably requested by Course Tutors and Management.
- Act in a professional manner at all times when dealing with trainees colleagues, individuals and outside agencies


- A level 3 vocational qualification In a relevant construction trade (Multiskills, Plumbing, Plastering, Bricklaying, Carpentry or Painting & Decorating) or prior history of working in�construction�
- Minimum of Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in English and Maths. Desirable - CSCS Card Desirable - Qualification in Health & Safety is desirable.
- Desirable -Teaching qualification (PTTLS / CTLLS / Cert-Ed / PGCE) NB Although desirable, a teaching qualification is not essential for this role as you will be under the direction of a Qualified Tutor.


- Good communication skills. Good organisation skills.
- The ability to handle challenging situations whilst remaining calm and in control especially in a group situation.
- Respect for and understanding of Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Data Protection policies with specific attention to health and safety requirements when organising off-site activities.
- A passion to motivate and lead by example to support people to achieve qualifications. An empathy with the learner group and experience of overcoming complex barriers, a background in working with unemployed and / or disadvantaged people and in a challenging environment is desirable.
- A willingness to undertake professional development activities
