To assess your will need to be qualified assessor, or at least working towards a qualification. The new Vocational Qualifications in Assessment include: Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment / Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment / Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievements / Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.

Previous qualifications were the TAQA, A1 and D32 / D33 Assessoe qualifications.

Apprenticeship Assessors often need to hold a teaching qualification alongside their Assessor award, due to many also delivering Functional Skills to learners. The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is the most up to date qualification. A previous qualification was the PTTLs.

Information for Apprenticeship Assessors:

All Apprenticeships must include the following elements:

A competencies qualification - which must be achieved by the apprentice to qualify for an Apprenticeship certificate, and which is the qualification required to demonstrate competence in performing the skill, trade or occupation to which the framework relates

A technical knowledge qualification - which is the qualification required to demonstrate achievement of the technical skills, knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts and knowledge and understanding of the industry and its market relevant to the skill, trade or occupation to which the framework relates. Sometimes an Apprenticeship framework may have an integrated qualification which combines competence and technical knowledge elements in which each element is separately assessed.

Functional Skills (e.g. Maths and English) qualifications or a GCSE with enhanced content (e.g. Maths and English)

Apprenticeships cover a wide variety of job roles:

Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Care / Estate Agency and Property /Arts, Media and Publishing / Business, Administration and Law / Construction, Planning and the Built Environment / Education and Training / Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies / Health, Public Services and Care / Information and Communication Technology / Leisure, Travel and Tourism / Retail and Commercial Enterprise / Recruitment, Social Media and Digital Marketing / Childcare.

Trailblazers! Employers are now leading the development of Apprenticeships and learning. A Trailblazer is made up of a group of employers who design new apprenticeship standards for occupations within their sectors. There are many new Trailblazer Apprenticeships.

With the New Employer Led Apprenticeships being introduced in England, there are Changes to Apprenticeship Standards which will affect Assessors.

The Apprenticeship Levy is a levy on employers in the United Kingdom, which will fund new apprenticeships. In England, the control of apprenticeship funding will be placed on employers through the Digital Apprenticeship Service.

The levy is charged at a rate of 0.5% of an employer’s paybill. Each employer will receive an allowance of £15,000 to offset against their levy payment. It was introduced in April 2017.

The changes to Apprenticeships have seen roles created for End Point Assessors to  deliver assessments across new Apprenticeship Standards.

To work as an End Point Assessor you need up to date experience of your selected occupational area to demonstrate your industry competence, along with an Assessor qualification. You can find End Point Assessor jobs on EAT Jobs.
