Supply Teachers are substitute teachers who fill the teaching role whenever there is a gap. Typically a Supply Teacher will fill in for teachers who might be on sick, sabbatical or on maternity leave. Supply Teachers manage the same day to day responsibilities as full time teachers; therefore they are required to have the same qualifications.
These requirements and qualifications include having Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a Bachelor of Education, GTC registration, and passing a security check.
A Supply Teachers role is to teach lessons, watch over kids during break time, assess student performance, handle after school duties as well as attend meetings with staff and parents. And like any other Teacher, Supply Teachers are expected to set a good example at all times for children and adult students alike.
A Supply Teacher acting as a stand-in for a Teacher is expected to perform the same duties in the Teachers absence. These duties include supervising and maintaining discipline within a classroom, teaching students as per the National Curriculum and using teaching materials, monitoring students and their progress and preparing reports.
To perform these duties successfully a good Supply Teacher will be skilled and ideally have experience of classroom and behaviour management, lesson planning, organisation and administration and teaching methodologies. Being innovative, resourceful, a good communicator who is loyal, trustworthy and approachable are strong attributes to have when entering this profession.
