Secondary School Teachers often specialise in one or more specific teaching subject areas and work with young people / teenagers to encourage academic development through the completion of examinations and assignments as set out in the National Curriculum.  These skills help students to acquire the knowledge needed to continue on to their academic careers. 

To become a Secondary School Teacher there are many study programmes and requirements which include;

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) / GCSEs (A-C) English and Maths / Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance / Initial Teacher Training (ITT) / Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) / School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) / Registered Teacher Programme (RTP) / Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).

Future Secondary School Teachers who attend university / college for teaching qualifications should pursue a Bachelors or Masters in Education and because Secondary School Teachers teach numerous courses in their curriculum, they should include studies in these areas within their degrees.

Secondary School Teachers are often expected to attend meetings or training seminars outside term-time in addition to the 5 day working week.  Additional time is also needed to prepare lessons, meet with parents and sometimes to monitor student’s extracurricular activities. Secondary School Teachers receive very good remuneration, work normal hours and claim good benefits such as pension, insurance, health care, holidays and maternity leave.

As a good Secondary School Teacher you would be expected to prepare / deliver / assess work, organise events / extracurricular activities and research new topics whilst being able to motivate and manage a classroom of students, communicate with patience and maintain professionalism at all times in what can be a very challenging and rewarding role.
