Primary School Teachers teach children from ages 5 to 11 years old within government or private academic institutions. Successful Primary School Teachers at Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2 are expected to prepare and present lessons in accordance to the National Curriculum to engage young learners in the foundation courses; preparing them with the knowledge and skills needed for Secondary School.


To become a Primary School Teacher you will need a BEd degree in core subjects of Science, Mathematics, or English but people with a BA or BSc and a PGCE who have QTS certification are also in demand. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is gained through Initial Teacher Training (ITT) which is done at four levels:
1. Undergraduate 2. Postgraduate 3. School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) 4. Work-based.

Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP), Registered Teacher Programme (RTP), Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP) or even Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) are some other certifications or acceptable qualifications for routes into Primary School Teaching.

Primary School Teachers are often expected to attend meetings or training seminars outside term-time in addition to the 5 day working week.  Additional time is also needed to prepare lessons, meet with parents and sometimes to monitor student’s extracurricular activities. Primary School Teacher gain good salaries and receive benefits such as pension, insurance, health care, holidays and maternity leave. 

Primary School Teachers should have good organisational and time management skills with the ability to maintain a level of discipline.  Good Primary School Teachers will be highly motivating, dedicated to their pupils and have a real desire to encourage education in children at Key Stages 1 & 2.
